Exfoliating face serum with lactic acid – Lactic acid 5 + a 2 – 30 ML – The Ordinary is a formula for superficial exfoliation with gentle lactic acid. Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid that exfoliates the skin. This 5-alpha formula provides a very gentle scrub and is enhanced with purified Tasmanian pepper berry, known to reduce signs of inflammation and sensitivity often associated with scrubbing. This formula contains a studied derivative of Tasmanian pepper berry that helps reduce irritation associated with acid use. This derivative comes from a plant and varies in color from place to place; this color variation may be apparent in the formula on occasion. Store in a cool, dry place; even a cooler is a good option. Caution: Lactic acid should not be used on sensitive, peeling, or damaged skin. Lactic acid has a pKa of 3.8, and pKa is the most important aspect to consider when formulating with acids. pKa stands for acid availability. When the pKa is close to the pH, there is an ideal balance between salinity and acidity, thus optimizing the acid's effectiveness and reducing irritation. A higher pH in this case increases salinity, which, contrary to what you might expect, would make the formula even more irritating than if it were more acidic. Note: While lactic acid can have quickly visible benefits, we normally recommend indirect forms of skin exfoliation over direct forms, such as this formula, due to the potential inflammation and sensitivity associated with acids.
